China in 2010: Now the 2nd Largest Economy of the World

In 2010, China surpassed Japan in GDP. Just the year before, it overtook Germany as the 3rd largest economy of the world.

All eyes are now on China’s rising consumer buying power to provide growth for the world economy in the next decade - says Fortune Magazine recently.

Besides being the biggest and most favored world factory, it is also the largest global market already for automobiles, mobile phones & telecom equipment, PCs, TVs, steel, textile machineries, LED lighting, etc. McKinsey argued that any multinationals that is unsuccessful in China will not be able to sustain cost-competitive product development and innovations that the global markets will require. And global players like GE had declared the same beliefs in 2009.

If one looks deeper, China has its fair share of challenges like pollution, inflation, wealth polarity, etc – but none seem to undermine its rising world stage status and its major influence in world economies and politics.

When people ask what determines success and failure for enterprises in China, foreign or local? The answer is amazingly consistent for most CEO’s: they would tell you “it is talent!” Numerous surveys on the biggest operating challenge for business leaders in China – all point to the fact whether you have the right leaders doing the right jobs, across pivotal positions throughout the organization.

However, the solution can be elusive. Some multinationals still send executives from their HQs to run China, but many fail because they lack either cultural sensitivity or long term commitment, or both.  And a no small percentage of CEOs for local Chinese enterprises fail because they don’t have sufficient global exposure or compliance standard needed to become globally successfully; flawed “going big – going strong” strategy is yet another hurdle for some.

While foreign firms and local firms may appear to suffer different reasons for failing to achieve what they could, the root cause in China is invariably leadership. With proper leadership, cultural barrier would be overcome, quality and productivity best practices introduced, and ethics and environmental compliances all implemented, and the right consultations, strategy development and due diligence would have taken place before a serious “China entry” or “go global” attempt.

Talent & leadership issues need to be addressed across all pivotal positions in the organization. In other words, if you want to demonstrate a competitive edge over and above your competition, you need to start from having the right leaders – with the right skill, experience, mind and value sets that match your company’s need.

Amrop China consultants bring years of corporate management, industry and leadership expertise to you.  With our customized client advisory approach, we share our insights to help you improve your leadership & organizational performance, leading to your business success both into and out of China.
